Among the Waves, Ivan Aivazovsky
Today we are going to talk about my favorite picture –
Among the Waves. This picture was painted by Ivan Aivazovsky in 1898. ‘Among
the Waves’ is considered the pinnacle of the artist’s works. To the artist’s
age of 81, when the artist painted his
work, Aivazovsky was so good painter that it took only 10 days to finish this work. It’s amazing because,
if you think for a second, the size of this picture is 285x429 cm.
There is one interesting story about this picture. When
Aivazovsky finished his work there was a little ship among the waves. But one
of the artist’s relative said what the
ship is too small for such big waves and it rather sinks. Artist was very angry about this comment and removed the
ship.
As I know, ‘Among the Waves’ was the favorite work of the
artist. Though Ivan Aivazovsky had exhibitions in Moscow, London, Saint
Petersburg, he never took this picture out of his hometown, Feodosia. Aivazovsky
even bequeathed this work to Feodosia. I think since then picture ‘Among the
Waves’ has never left Aivazovsky’s gallery in Feodosia.
The picture makes a great
impression on anyone who looks at it. When you look at it, you have felt like you are among the waves. And if you
have seasickness it better for you to stay away from this picture. I think it
is one of the pictures that you should
see in reality because no one photo can
convey these feeling when you are looking at it.
